Your advice to young professionals looking at sales as a career…
I think sales as a training ground is an excellent place to start your career, you really get grounded in what is practical, what will work, what wont work. Having said that I think sales is one of the most repetitive and mind numbing jobs which one can do and very very rapidly that intuitive sense will become into mindsets, very rapidly that repetitive behaviour will become habits and then there will be stagnation so I would strongly advise any young professional getting into it to not see it as a long term career. Be in it, be a champion at sales, and then move from it, move ahead, and move onto something else and if you’re already in sales and especially if you’re in digital sales and when you are in this new environment you will constantly be bombarded with data. you will constantly be bombarded with immediate priorities which you can literally term as instant gratification or instant sales for that matter. I think the learning will happen when you step out beyond that and actually give yourself time to actually go down to the ground shops and see how people are actually buying. Turn off your mobile, turn off your emails and just watch how the buying process happens. I think the learning that you’ll get from that will be far richer than you can ever imagine.
