Chief Marketing Officer Hiring: Research on what CEOs Prioritise

The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) is crucial for organisations aiming to maintain a competitive edge. Understanding the essential skills and traits that define successful CMOs is vital for companies looking to hire top marketing talent. Chief Marketing Officers seeking a new role should understand what the hiring managers are looking for too.

Paul Writer conducted a survey with 132 CEOs from India-based organisations to uncover the key aspects influencing CMO hiring decisions. This survey aimed to highlight the critical skills, qualifications, and expectations that CEOs consider while selecting marketing leadership.

Key Attributes of the Chief Marketing Officer

Strategic Leadership

According to the survey, marketing strategy emerged as the most critical skill for a CMO, with an overwhelming 96% of CEOs identifying it as a “must-have.” This reflects the increasing importance of aligning marketing efforts with business goals. The modern CMO must be adept at formulating and executing strategies that resonate with both market opportunities and the company’s long-term objectives.

Team Leadership and Brand Management

Another essential component for Chief Marketing Officers is the ability to lead and inspire a marketing team. 81% of CEOs indicated that team leadership is crucial for a successful CMO. In addition to leadership, brand management was emphasised, with 72% of CEOs marking it as a “must-have” skill. This highlights the pivotal role CMOs play in managing brand reputation, which directly impacts customer perception and market positioning.

Data & Analytics and Digital Marketing:

In today’s data-driven world, CMOs are expected to have a strong grasp of data analytics and digital marketing. The survey revealed that 68% of CEOs view data and analytics as critical for CMOs, emphasising the need for marketing leaders to make informed, data-backed decisions. Similarly, digital marketing expertise, seen as “important” by 59% of CEOs, underscores the growing reliance on digital channels to engage customers and drive revenue.

Emerging Skills: AI and Sales

Interestingly, AI skills are becoming increasingly relevant for CMOs, with 49% of CEOs deeming them important. This reflects the rising impact of AI in marketing automation and predictive analytics, marking a shift in how marketing strategies are formulated. Sales, while not seen as a core requirement, was still recognised as important by 50% of CEOs, indicating the growing need for Chief Marketing Officers to collaborate with sales teams to drive business growth.

Evaluation Criteria for CMO Candidates

The survey also explored how CEOs evaluate CMO candidates. The most common approaches include asking for examples of past work, assigning case studies, and consulting references. It is noteworthy that none of the CEOs relied solely on HR recommendations, and certifications or specialised qualifications were not considered essential. This suggests that practical experience and a proven track record weigh more heavily in hiring decisions than formal education or credentials.

External Hiring Trends

The survey found that 62% of CEOs prefer to hire CMOs externally, with 17% using head-hunters to find the right candidate. This demonstrates that many organisations seek fresh perspectives and new ideas from external talent, rather than promoting from within. The preference for external hiring may also reflect the evolving demands of the CMO role, which now requires a blend of traditional marketing expertise and modern digital acumen.

The insights gathered from this survey highlight the multifaceted nature of CMO hiring in large Indian organizations. As the role continues to evolve, companies are prioritising strategic leadership, data-driven decision-making, and digital marketing expertise.
